Oshogatsu 2011 With Derrick May

Photograph courtesy of residentadvisor.netLegendary artist, producer and DJ Derrick May will be ringing in the New Year with four shows in Japan. Much like my man "Zurui" Derrick May is a Detroit, native and is quite popular in Japan, but if you’re not familiar with his work, he is by far one of the most influential Techno artist in the world. Now mind you, Derrick would probably like to distance himself from the term "techno" because it has become such a generic label or because of the stigma attached to that genre as being repetitive garbage without soul. But believe me, nothing could be further from the truth. With influences ranging from German artist such as Kraftwerk to funk, jazz and soul, his distinct sound can't be denied.Clip courtesy of Bleep43 and Don Chow. (Warning video contains slight profanity).Along with Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, Derrick and company were know by some as the "Belleville Three," named after Belleville, Michigan where they began to forge their new sound know as techno or high tech soul. Derrick has lived in Japan and has a great appreciation for his Japanese fans. In an outstanding "Scene 360" interview with Joanne Shurvell, Derrick was quoted as saying, "Tokyo has an incredible scene. It’s out of control. It’s perfection. The enthusiasm from the local Japanese is insane."December 31, 2010 at 22:00Electronic Tribe - New Year's Party 2011The Garden RoomMita 1-13-2
